LeBron James can lead Cleveland to the title before leaving this summer…

LeBron James is one of the biggest names in basketball history. The overall number one pick from the 2003 NBA Draft has lived up to the hype and must be regarded as one of the best players of all-time.

He has won the NBA Championship twice – both with the Miami Heat – and has been named the Most Valuable Player on four separate occasions. Ultimately, he’s a dominant force in the sport but his second tenure in Cleveland may be coming to an end. At least, it is if you believe the latest reports that suggest James could be on his way out of the Quicken Loans Arena at the end of the campaign.

LeBron gone

The basketball season may still be some way off starting but this summer has arguably been the most exciting of the whole season.

First, it saw that the Miami Heat were beatable, despite the grandeur of their roster, when they were demolished 4-1 by the San Antonio Spurs. Secondly, LeBron James has gone home. The Heat ace has agreed to rejoin his old club the Cleveland Cavaliers, ending a four your association with the Florida based side.

Oden may be leaning toward Cavs

Both Cleveland and Charlotte are said to be prepared to make Oden an offer following the Feb. 21 trading deadline. Boston also remains interested, although it’s believed Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge won’t get into any sort of bidding war.

Sessions could get squeezed by draft

If and when the Cavaliers draft Kyrie Irving in 11 days, it will give
them three quality point guards on the roster. That might be one too
many for Ramon Sessions’ liking.

Sessions would seem to be the odd man out, with Irving as the point
guard of the future and Baron Davis on hand to groom him as such.
Sessions averaged 13.3 points and 5.2 assists last season, his first in
Cleveland. Now 25 and a four-year veteran, Sessions believes he can
start in this league. That doesn’t appear likely to happen in Cleveland. Continue reading “Sessions could get squeezed by draft” »

Cavaliers unlikely to score a big star

The Cavaliers will finally learn during Tuesday
night’s lottery where they are drafting next month. Unfortunately, there
isn’t a set of pingpong balls on the planet that will improve the
quality of this draft.

We’ve heard for months this could be the worst draft in 25 years, but just how bad is it?

This bad: One NBA talent evaluator
said last week he isn’t sure there is a future All-Star anywhere in this
draft. To put that in perspective, every draft between 1978 and 2008
has produced at least three All-Stars, except one year (2007). That
draft is still too young to judge, since guys like Mike Conley, Jeff
Green and Joakim Noah could still make an All-Star team before their
careers are through.

Should Cavaliers go after Greg Oden? Hey, Mary!

Got a Cavs question? Send it in. Submit your question at
cleveland.com/heymary, and Plain Dealer Cavs beat writer Mary Schmitt
Boyer will choose at least one to answer each Sunday here in the Sports
section. All of Mary’s answers are archived online.

Q: Hey, Mary: I recently heard that Greg Oden will be a free agent this
upcoming summer. It has been said that the Cavs can’t attract top free
agents. But with Oden growing up in Indiana and playing at Ohio State,
wouldn’t a Midwestern destination like Cleveland be appealing to him? He
has had injury problems. But with the success the Cavs had in their
patience with [Zydrunas Ilgauskas], do you think they might pursue him,
since a dominant big man is their glaring weakness? — Rich Smith,

Tom Izzo visits with Cleveland Cavaliers, but leaves town without making decisio

Tom Izzo came, he saw, he dined. What he’ll do next, however, remains
uncertain.

The Michigan State coach and his family spent all Thursday afternoon and
evening with Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, General Manager Chris Grant,
and assistant general manager Lance Blanks.

According to multiple sources, the visit went well and Izzo and his
family were impressed with the Cavs’ facilities and the city. But Izzo
left town after nearly nine hours without accepting Gilbert’s offer Continue reading “Tom Izzo visits with Cleveland Cavaliers, but leaves town without making decisio” »

Reshuffled front office isn't slowing Cleveland Cavaliers' off-season

CLEVELAND, Ohio — One message has become quite clear since the
Cavaliers’ season ended just three weeks ago. Team owner Dan Gilbert is
not interested in status quo.

He’s fired the coach, accepted the resignation of the general manager
and there are no signs of stopping.

Gilbert has qualified these moves by saying he will not be afraid to
take risks. Or as he said Friday: "The unknown is just that." Continue reading “Reshuffled front office isn't slowing Cleveland Cavaliers' off-season” »

Cavaliers will enter coaching search with plenty of big name hopes

No NBA team makes a coaching change without considering who will be the
next coach. Some plans are more feasible than others, of course.

After firing Mike Brown after five seasons on Sunday, the Cavs have
thrust themselves into a complex and uncertain coaching search. For one,
they are one of six teams now looking for a head coach. Also without a
firm handle on the future of free agent LeBron James, the team will
certainly be limited in how it can pitch its job to the top-flight
coaches they may look to attract.

Usually, teams want new coaches in place before the draft and the start
of free agency. But with the cir*****stances, the team may not be able to
make a decision until after James does. That might not be until July. Continue reading “Cavaliers will enter coaching search with plenty of big name hopes” »
