Dempsey: Warkentien rumors worrisome

About a week or so ago, reports surfaced that Portland is interested in
Mark Warkentien, the Nuggets vice president of basketball operations,
becoming its next general manager.

Currently, Kevin Pritchard is the Trail Blazers’ general manager. But
after team president Tom Penn was recently fired, Warren Legarie — agent
for Miller and Pritchard — openly wondered if his other Trail Blazers

Phil Jackson says he's likely to coach Lakers next year

In his pregame talk with the media, Phil Jackson sounded a little less
certain, and a little more like this was all tied to winning another
title. From the AP story:

Lakers coach Phil Jackson says he hasn’t decided whether he’ll
return for another season on the Los Angeles bench but he might be

Mayo sees good thing with Griz

An informant entered the visitors’ locker room to tell the Grizzlies
that Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis was sitting out their game
Wednesday night in Oracle Arena.

That turned out to be false: Ellis started despite having flu-like
symptoms. But Griz center Marc Gasol jokingly told O.J. Mayo that Ellis

Federal prosecutors had just released a devastating 61-page do*****ent
illustrating how the culture of permissiveness could crumble an NBA
franchise. Gilbert Arenas(notes) pushed to see how far the Washington
Wizards would let him go, and that turned out to be all the way to a
felony, all the way probably to jail.

Walsh eyes waived Raja

Knicks president Donnie Walsh said yesterday he would talk to Raja
Bell’s representative now that Bell has been waived by the Warriors.

Bell, the defensive guard who starred for Mike D’Antoni in Phoenix, will
become a free agent when he clears waivers today, but more important
Bell becomes a free agent this summer.
