‘Melo still eyes change for the better

Not long after George Karl made his triumphant return with a resounding
victory over the Utah Jazz, the Denver Nuggets coach had an important
announcement for the assembled media. Despite Carmelo Anthony’s(notes)
well-chronicled efforts to push for a trade, Karl said, the Nuggets are
”going to keep him here whether he knows it or not.”

Anthony later laughed off his coach’s attempt at humor because that’s
all it was – a joke. For all the goodwill inspired by the Nuggets’
season-opening rout of their Northwest Division rival, Anthony told
Yahoo! Sports Wednesday night that he still doesn’t intend to sign the
team’s three-year, $64 million contract extension.

Pistons president Joe Dumars open to making a deal

Pistons president Joe Dumars spoke with Vincent Goodwill of The Detroit
News on Sunday about the upcoming season. Though he could not address
the sale of the franchise because of ongoing negotiations, Dumars
touched on a number of subjects, including trades, expectations and
payroll.

Goodwill: At the end of last season, you said you intended to be busy
with the trade market. That didn’t happen, so how satisfied are you with

Chandler may sign extension with Knicks

– Mike D’Antoni hasn’t yet decided on whether Wilson Chandler will start
Wednesday’s season opener for the Knicks at shooting guard, but there
have been preliminary discussions between Chandler and the team about a
potential contract extension, The Post has learned.

Source: Heat work out Jerry Stackhouse

The Miami Heat are looking into adding another veteran to their
experience-laden roster. Jerry Stackhouse, who will turn 36 years-old
next month, worked out for the Heat in Atlanta on Thursday, a source
close to the team said.

Stackhouse met with Heat officials including team president Pat Riley on
Thursday and attended the Heat’s game Thursday night against the Hawks.

Hornets acquire guard Jerryd Bayless in trade with the Portland Trail Blazers

The New Orleans Hornets have acquired guard Jerryd Bayless from the
Portland Trail Blazers in a trade exchange for a future first-round
pick, league sources confirmed Saturday night.Bayless solidifies the
Hornets’ backup point guard spot before the regular season. The Hornets’
roster now stands at 16 and they have until Tuesday to meet the
league-maximum requirement 15 players. New Orleans opens the regular
season Wednesday night against the Milwaukee Bucks at the New Orleans
Arena.

Trail Blazers will sign center Steven Hill to training camp contract

The Trail Blazers plan to sign center Steven Hill to a training camp
contract in an effort to fortify their injury-depleted frontcourt,
according to a source close to the situation.

The 7-foot Hill, who played on the Blazers’ summer league team in 2008
and briefly with the Oklahoma City Thunder during the 2008-09 season,
was traveling to Portland Sunday afternoon and the parties were
optimistic that Hill would be available to play Monday night, when the

Bogut likely to be limited by injury all season

After sitting out the Milwaukee Bucks’ first three exhibition games with
soreness and swelling in his surgically repaired right hand, center
Andrew Bogut is dealing with his physical situation.

"I might not be 100% the whole year," said Bogut.

Bogut, a third-team all-NBA selection last season, suffered injuries to
his right hand, wrist and elbow in a gruesome fall on April 3. He sat
out the three exhibition contests after getting hit on the hand in
