The Knicks will have to defy the odds if they want to sign LeBron James next summer.A Las Vegas bookmaker has installed the Cleveland Cavaliers as a 2-5 favorite to re-sign James, who can become an .unrestricted free agent on July 1. According to Bodog.com, the odds of James joining the Knicks next summer are 9-4.
James remains noncommittal about his future, and a majority of league executives believes that he won’t leave Cleveland for the Knicks, a franchise that has suffered through eight straight losing seasons. During his annual media conference call Friday, NBA commissioner David Stern was asked if having a winning team in New York is important to the overall success of the league.
"We’ve had an incredible run for the last 25 years, and the Knicks, some years they’ve been a part of it, and some years they haven’t," Stern said. "But it hasn’t had any noticeable impact on our growth."
The Knicks believe they can enhance their chances of luring James to New York if they can find enough salary-cap space to sign another potential top-flight free agent, preferably Toronto’s Chris Bosh.
