What they haven’t answered yet is whether Smart will be back to coach him.

The Warriors rewarded general manager Larry Riley with a contract
extension Thursday and also hired a new assistant GM in former player
agent Bob Myers. But team officials didn’t provide any update on the
status of Smart, who has a team option for next season on his contract.After taking over for Don Nelson this season, Smart led the Warriors to 36 victories, 10 more than the team had a year ago. The players like Smart, who is close to star guard Monta Ellis(notes), and it would be tough to replace him with a third coach in three seasons in what could be a lockout-shortened season.

An NBA source, however, told Yahoo! Sports that Warriors ownership is in no rush to make a decision on Smart. It also will be interesting to see if the new owners feel the need to make a splash with a new coach.

“We know coach Smart,” Warriors guard Stephen Curry(notes) said. “We know his system, what he’s trying to do and how much passion he has to get our team to that next level. He’s been here for eight years and he’s tired of losing. He’s going to do whatever it takes to get us over that hump.

In the article it is reported that “Collins was refuting an Associated Press report that quoted him as saying he had spoken with the 76ers about their coaching job that became available earlier in the week.
"They know, I’ve talked to them like two or three times, they know what I’ve said," Collins was quoted as saying. "Whatever they want to do, they know where I am if they want to call."

That, Collins said, didn’t happen. Collins told the Daily News that he had "absolutely not talked to the Sixers," and said the story was "out of line."

Earlier in the day, John Langel, Collins’ longtime agent, said that he had no knowledge of contact from either side. Last night, Langel said, "It’s unlikely that would have occurred without my knowledge."

Former Toronto Raptors coach Brendan Malone was appointed interim coach.Silas told The Associated Press he was informed at a morning meeting with general manager Jim Paxson and new owner Dan Gilbert. Silas’ son, assistant Stephen Silas, also was fired.

Malone’s first game as the Cavaliers’ head coach will be Tuesday night at home against Detroit.

Despite superstar LeBron James, fellow all-star Zydrunas Ilgauskas and a veteran bench, the Cavaliers have struggled since the all-star break. They have lost nine of 12 and nine straight road games, including Sunday’s 105-98 loss to Toronto when James scored a franchise-record 56.

The trouble may have culminated Sunday when Silas benched starting guard Jeff McInnis and replaced him with Eric Snow. Snow did not score in Cleveland’s loss at Toronto and McInnis, despite dressed and available, didn’t play.

Earlier this season, Silas threw Snow off the bench after the two exchanged words during the first quarter at Detroit, a move that stunned the team because of Snow’s reputation as a leader.

Last week, Silas was fined $10,000 US by the team for a derogatory comment he made about Utah forward Carlos Boozer.

Silas made the remark to reporters a day before Boozer was to return to Cleveland after leaving the Cavaliers as a free agent last summer. Boozer didn’t travel with the Jazz because of a foot injury. Silas later apologized.

The 61-year-old Silas joined Cleveland in June 2003 after being fired by the New Orleans Hornets, having led them to the playoffs four straight times.

Malone, in his first season with the Cavaliers, was the first coach of the expansion Raptors, spending one season with the team. He’s been an assistant with New York, Indiana, Seattle and Detroit in 19 years of NBA coaching.

“We felt the change today was necessary. It’s going to put us in a better position to win,” Gilbert said.

During 16 seasons as an NBA player, Silas was fierce under the boards and on defense. He was twice selected as an all-star and won three NBA championships — two with Boston, one with Seattle.

As a coach, he had a record of 355-400 with the Clippers, Hornets and Cavaliers. His Hornets teams (both in Charlotte and New Orleans) went 13-16 the playoffs.

In his eighth season with the Mavericks, the 64-year-old Nelson has won 1,190 games and trails only Lenny Wilkens on the NBA’s all-time wins list. He has missed 13 contests this season, however.

Johnson, who has been groomed as Nelson’s successor, guided the Mavericks to a 7-3 record during Nelson’s absence in January and won two of three games last week. He also has conducted most of the team’s practices this season.

With the dismissal of Minnesota’s Flip Saunders earlier this season, Nelson had been the NBA’s second longest-tenured coach behind Utah Jerry Sloan and San Antonio’s Greg Popovich.

While he never got to the NBA Finals, Nelson turned the Mavericks into perennial 50-game winners as the team has averaged 55 victories the last four seasons.

Coach Johnny Davis was fired Thursday, with the Magic moving closer to falling out of playoff contention. Assistant Chris Jent was named interim coach.

Davis was dismissed along with assistant coach Ron Ekker hours after Wednesday night’s 110-102 road loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, dropping the Magic to 31-33 and leaving them tied with Philadelphia for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Davis told the Orlando Sentinel he was “surprised and disappointed” by being fired with just 18 games left in the season and the club still trying to make the playoffs.

“It caught me completely off guard,” Davis said.

Davis was hired Nov. 17, 2003, replacing Doc Rivers when the team was 1-10 and on its way to losing 19 straight. Later in the season under Davis, the team lost 13 straight, including an NBA-record seven straight by at least 15 points, and finished 21-61.

In the off-season, the team traded all-star forward Tracy McGrady to Houston. Orlando showed improvement before its recent slump.

Davis’ overall record with the Magic was 51-84. He also coached Philadelphia in 1996-97, going 22-60 there.

Orlando is the seventh team to make a coaching change this season, following Memphis, New York, Denver, the Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota and Portland.
