One minute after free agency began in July 2010, Minnesota
Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn reached out
to the Octagon basketball group to arrange for a face-to-face visit with
restricted free agent forward Rudy Gay.
A visit was agreed upon, but before Gay got on a flight for
Minneapolis, he re-signed with Memphis for five years and $80 million.
Two-and-a-half years later, Gay is readily available — mostly
because the Grizzlies, barring a trade of either him or another
high-priced player, will be in luxury tax purgatory.
So, this is Kahn’s chance to land a player he has long coveted. But
according to a league source, he turned down a trade proposal from
Memphis for Gay recently.
In fact, the source insists Kahn said no immediately. It’s unknown
what Memphis’ idea was, but since it was turned down emphatically, logic
suggests it involved All-Star Kevin Love and/or center Nikola Pekovic. It’s possible three- or four-team trade scenarios were discussed, too.
Until Gay is moved — which is not a given, even though Memphis is
calling many teams — the Wolves are worth monitoring. The source said
the Wolves like him, but the 2½ years and approximately $45 million
remaining on Gay’s contract is an issue.http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/The_Scoops_Wolves_quickly_rejected_trade_offer_for_Memphis_Rudy_Gay_011013

CLEARLY disheartened to be waived by the Memphis Grizzlies, Jerome
Jordan may have been hard done by rumuors indicating he had already made
plans to play in the Far East.
With the Grizzlies’ US$26m over the salary-cap entering the 2012-13 NBA
season and under new ownership, and Jordan, as a second year NBA player,
will have to earn at least US$762,195, the writing was on the wall for
the 26-year-old.

An Internet report had circulated that the Jamaican seven-footer had packed his bags and checked for China.
However, he was simply trying to find his feet in Memphis, making a
strong case for a spot on the roster in the Grizzlies training camp.
Jordan himself struck down the rumours on the Grizzlies blog that he had agreed to employment anywhere.
"I know my agent has been talking to a bunch of teams. You know, as a
worst-case scenario," Jordan said. "I don’t know if there’s a deal, per
se, in China. But it’s about making it in the NBA this year. I’m about
trying to make it in the league and establish myself. I want to be
around a long time."

Turns out that Zach Randolph’s Game 1 performance Sunday afternoon against the San Antonio Spurs came with added motivation.

The Grizzlies’ forward is set to sign a four-year contract extension
this week worth $66 million guaranteed with an additional $5 million in
incentives, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.
Randolph’s agent, Raymond Brothers, and Griz general manager Chris
Wallace agreed to a deal in principle late Saturday night, the sources
said.

Randolph is expected to sign the contract Monday or Tuesday with the
Griz making an official announcement before Wednesday’s Game 2 against
the Spurs.

Within the past week, both sides agreed on financial terms that
includes a player option for the fourth year. They were working through
other clauses, including one that had to do with personal conduct.

But Randolph, who turns 30 in July, hasn’t had any off-court problems
since joining the Griz in 2009. Instead, he’s been one of the league’s
top contributors in the community to go with career productivity on the
court.http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2011/apr/17/sources-zach-randolph-agrees-4-year-deal-worth-mor/

An informant entered the visitors’ locker room to tell the Grizzlies
that Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis was sitting out their game
Wednesday night in Oracle Arena.

That turned out to be false: Ellis started despite having flu-like
symptoms. But Griz center Marc Gasol jokingly told O.J. Mayo that Ellis
must have "Mayo-itis."

Several Griz players laughed although Mayo didn’t think the mention of Ellis was very funny last month at the NBA’s trade deadline. If it is true that the Warriors turned down a Grizzlies offer that would have essentially swapped Mayo for Ellis, the guy wearing No. 32 in Beale Street Blue wants to understand why.

"We definitely need to keep this team together," Mayo said before the Grizzlies faced the Warriors. "It’s a young team. We all like each other. We’re playing well. Just when you get something good, why break it up? It doesn’t make sense. But that’s this business."

Memphis and Golden State first had mild conversations about Ellis and Mayo back in November. Talks cooled quickly, but they reportedly heated up again around mid-February.

One rumor had the Grizzlies trying to package No. 2 overall pick Hasheem Thabeet with Mayo. Both teams have since downplayed the speculation, insisting that the other was the aggressor even though discussions never got serious.

Mayo said his agent informed him about a potential deal, and he credited veteran teammates for keeping the ordeal in perspective.

"It’s part of the business," Mayo said. "I can’t imagine not being here (with Memphis). But it is what it is. I guess the team thought maybe Monta Ellis would be a better fit. I don’t know."

Griz owner Michael Heisley acknowledged communication between the franchises but refused to offer details in a recent interview with The Commercial Appeal.

http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2010/mar/25/mayo-sees-good-thing-with-griz/

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Former UConn star Rudy Gay seemed lukewarm on
remaining in the obscurity of Memphis when he becomes a restricted free
agent in July when the Knicks and Nets become two of his options.

"I wouldn’t mind staying here, if I feel they were going to make a commitment to me,” Gay said at the morning shootaround at FEDEX Forum. "It’s a business. I’m only the one here from my first year so I know the business more than anyone on this team. It really doesn’t matter which way it goes.”

Not exactly a ringing endorsement for wanting to remain on Beale Street, playing in the league’s smallest market and playing before the second-worst attendance (averaging 13,000 despite a winning record).

But it is the Grizzlies who control his fate as they can match any offer since he is restricted. And the Knicks have to explore the bigger fish in LeBron James, Joe Johnson, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh Amare Stoudemire first before tendering Gay an offer sheet. That would tie them up as long as one week. Gay is not a max player but is averaging 20 points and 5.9 rebounds.

Getting Bosh, Gay and keeping David Lee wouldn’t be the worst July for the Knicks. Gay said he still gets "chills” playing the Garden. Not a bad sign.

Mike D’Antoni continues to rave about ex-Celtic Bill Walker, whom the Knicks are interested in keeping on. Funny how there’s been more buzz about Walker than Tracy McGrady recently. Walker faces his former high school teammate O.J. Mayo tonight. They teammed for two state high school championships in Cincy.

D-League assignment to the Dakota Wizards to ESPN.com earlier Thursday.

Thabeet is the highest draft pick ever sent to the D-League by an NBA team. Players can only be assigned to D-League duty by their NBA teams during their first two seasons as a pro.

Thabeet’s assignment to the Wizards — Memphis’ North Dakota-based affiliate — was first reported by the Web site RidiculousUpside.com, which covers the D-League extensively.

Although the Grizzlies acknowledged that Thabeet was a long-term project when they selected him with the No. 2 pick in June over the likes of local collegiate star Tyreke Evans, Memphis was hoping that the 7-foot-3 center could survive as a backup in his first NBA season. But Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins announced earlier this week that second-year center Hamed Haddadi of Iran would begin receiving Thabeet’s minutes behind starting center Marc Gasol.

The Grizzlies, according to NBA front-office sources, offered Thabeet and second-year guard O.J. Mayo to the Golden State Warriors for Warriors guard Monta Ellis before the Feb. 18 trade deadline but were turned down.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4946483
