As rumors swirled all day Wednesday regarding possible trade destinations for New Orleans Hornets guard Eric Gordon, it seemed unlikely he would be moved by Thursday’s trading deadline because of the size of his contract and his continued absence from the court in the second of back-to-back games.

The fact that Gordon did not play in Wednesday night’s 105-100 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers would likely tend to scare off any potential interest from other NBA teams who might have concerns about his current and long-term health. And Gordon’s four-year, $58 million contract could also dissuade suitors because of the more penal luxury tax in place in the new collective bargaining agreement.
There has been universal doubt around the league about Gordon’s health, according to numerous sources, and that will increase the difficulty of making a trade.
The most prevalent speculation Wednesday centered around a possible Gordon deal to the Golden State Warriors in return for Klay Thompson.

Williams, 38, spent five years as an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers but has never been a head coach prior to accepting the Hornets’ job.

Former NBA point guard Mark Jackson is the next candidate the New
Orleans Hornets are expected to contact to gauge his interest in their
head coaching vacancy, according to league sources.

And according to a source close to Jackson, an ESPN/ABC analyst, he is
interested in pursuing the Hornets’ vacancy.

Jackson played 17 seasons in the NBA, mainly with the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks, but has no experience as a head coach or as an assistant. He was a finalist for the Minnesota Timberwolves’ job last summer before losing out to Los Angeles Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis.

Jackson, 45, also was close to landing the New York Knicks’ job in 2008 before former Phoenix Suns coach Mike D’Antoni was hired.

In addition to the Hornets’ opening, Jackson is expected to be a candidate for the Los Angeles Clippers’ job.

It is uncertain how quickly the Hornets will move to fill their vacancy, but team president Hugh Weber said last week that ongoing negotiations involving minority owner Gary Chouest’s attempted purchase of George Shinn’s 75 percent share of the franchise will not impede their search.

Yet, uncertainty regarding the sale might turn off some potential candidates.

The Hornets already have made preliminary contact with representatives of former Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson, former Knicks and Houston Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy and TNT analyst Doug Collins, who appears to be a serious candidate although he is not yet publicly expressed interest in the job. Collins last coached in 2003, with the Washington Wizards.

League sources said the Hornets have not formally interviewed candidates, yet. As they proceed, several top assistant coaches on playoff teams are expected to be considered, including the Portland Trail Blazers’ Monty Williams, the Utah Jazz’s Ty Corbin, the Dallas Mavericks’ Dwane Casey and the Boston Celtics’ Tom Thibodeau. Per NBA rules, those coaches must be granted permission by their current teams to talk to the Hornets.

The Hornets, meanwhile, are likely to wait and see what Charlotte Bobcats Coach Larry Brown may do. There are reports Brown might leave the Bobcats, who were eliminated from the playoffs by the Orlando Magic on Monday night, to coach the Philadelphia 76ers.

Doug Collins couldn’t get a bite from the 76ers when their coaching job
was open last summer, but he has – according to a source familiar with
the situation – drawn interest now from the New Orleans Hornets.

Jeff Bower, who completed this season as both coach and general manager, has given up his coaching duties to concentrate on the front office. He served in a dual capacity after the firing of Byron Scott.

The source said the Hornets’ contact with Collins, 58, has been preliminary. Collins, who spent his entire NBA playing career with the Sixers, was unavailable for comment. *

First, it was the baseless report out of Sacramento that the New Orleans Hornets were shopping center Emeka Okafor. Now in today’s Cleveland Plain Dealer, there’s rampant speculation that the Hornets are willing to deal just about everyone but Chris Paul.

According to high-level team sources, the Hornets won’t be moving anyone anytime soon. The club is going to stick with this group to see what it can do. So any movement this far away from the February trading deadline is unexpected.

John Reid

As Hornets players gathered at the Alario Center on Thursday morning, team president Hugh Weber met with captains Chris Paul and David West to inform them that Coach Byron Scott was fired and his replacement would be General Manager Jeff Bower.
Paul wasn’t happy with the decision, and he wasn’t pleased with being caught off guard by the announcement. He said New Orleans should have sought his and West’s input before the decision was finalized.

"I felt like maybe somebody would have at least consulted with me and asked how I felt before it happened," Paul said by telephone Thursday night. "It’s not to get my approval, but we feel we should know about the decision before it takes place."

The Hornets have struggled this season, getting off to a 3-6 start. Weber said the organization didn’t see enough improvement, which necessitated the move.

"You can’t put all this on Coach," Paul said.

Scott is the only coach that Paul has played for since coming to the Hornets as a first-round draft pick in 2005. They became golf playing partners this summer, and Paul largely credits Scott for helping him develop into a two-time All-Star point guard and Olympic gold medal winner (2008 Beijing).

Though Scott was a demanding coach, Paul said their relationship transcended the basketball court.

Chandler, 26, is owed $24.6 million over the next two seasons –
assuming he exercises his player option for $12.8 million in 2010-11 –

Scott said backup point guard Speedy Claxton, who missed his first game since November after spraining his left ankle Tuesday at Indiana, and starting forward Desmond Mason, who bruised his tailbone Wednesday against Utah, are both “pretty confident” they will return.

He said forward David West, the team’s top scorer and rebounder, should be back at practice Friday after taking two games off to be with his wife and newborn child.

“Hopefully Saturday we’ll be pretty much full strength,” Scott said. “We’ll have some bumps and bruises. Those guys won’t be at 100 percent probably, but they’ll be in uniform and ready to play.”

After practice Thursday, point guard Chris Paul wore a wrap around his left shoulder, which he hurt when he slammed into Blazers center Ha Seung-Jin in New Orleans’ final game before the All-Star break.

Paul has played in both of New Orleans’ games after the break, averaging 22.5 points.

“I still think he’s got a little bit of a stinger in that shoulder so he’s going to continue to get treatment on that and ice it down more for precautionary reasons than anything,” Scott said. “Right now, he’s just trying to prevent that thing from flaring back up and going back to where it was at the beginning.”
