With NBA lockout talks stalling in New York, the Warriors on Wednesday held an old-fashioned revival at Oracle Arena.

In his first meeting with Warriors fans, new coach Mark Jackson started
an impromptu chant of "De-fense" among a confused audience, which has
rarely heard that word while missing the playoffs 16 of the past 17
seasons.

"Don’t stand up and clap when we’re a playoff basketball team, because we won’t be standing up and clapping as a team," Jackson said. "Our ultimate goal will be to hang a championship banner."

Those kinds of stirring and outrageous statements were the norm as about 3,000 Warriors season-ticket holders listened to a panel discussion with the team’s hierarchy, including Jackson, co-owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber and executive board member Jerry West.

The pomp and cir*****stance included free food and parking, opportunities to buy more seats for a season that might never be played, and the finale of the Warrior Girls tryouts – complete with a swimsuit competition.

he had a glimmer of hope when the Warriors headed into the All-Star
The Warriors returned from the break with a 2-7 stretch, during which
they played some of their worst ball and showed major personnel flaws.
Riley, who was more willing to say the roster flaws were his fault than
to talk about Smart’s on-court failures, assesses the team’s needs as a
center, a big guard and a legitimate sixth man who will probably be a
wing player.

The new regime running the Warriors knows what it wants in a head coach. It’s not Keith Smart. The
Warriors informed Smart on Wednesday that he wouldn’t be retained as
their coach. Now in the market for their third coach in three years, the
Warriors want one who is going to be around a few years and can develop
young talent, said Larry Riley, the team’s head of basketball
operations. They also want a coach with a vision on how to get this team
into the playoffs, an event the Warriors have missed for 16 of the past
17 seasons.
"The main thing," Riley said, "is we do feel like we need a new direction."Smart
led the Warriors to a 36-46 record this past season, a 10-game
improvement over the 2009-10 campaign under coach Don Nelson.
Riley
said Smart did a good job, citing the team’s effort and chemistry. But
Smart didn’t do enough to convince the decision-makers — Riley,
co-owner Joe Lacob and vice president of basketball operations Bob Myers
— that he was the coach to take this team to the next level.

Most
everyone figured Smart’s return was unlikely when he signed — perhaps
even Smart. He was introduced as head coach the day before training
camp, after signing a contract that had just one guaranteed season and a
team option for the next.
"I don’t know if it was ever going to
be a fair shot," Smart said in a phone interview. "I was put in a
situation to try to coach this team and get this headed in the right direction. Fair or not fair, who knows? But certain things had to fall in place for it to happen."
Riley
said the Warriors haven’t contacted anyone yet and don’t have a
timetable for hiring a new coach, though he said it wouldn’t hurt to
have one by the NBA draft, which is June 23.http://www.insidebayarea.com/warriors/ci_17944980

The future of Warriors coach Keith Smart is still unsettled and will
remain that way for another week or two, according to co-owner Joe Lacob
and general manager Larry Riley.

Neither decision-maker was especially complimentary of Smart’s rookie
season, and speaking in separate media sessions Friday, both Lacob and
Riley were vague on how the coach will ultimately be evaluated.

Since Lacob is in New York for the NBA Board of Governors meetings
and has commitments into next week, he predicted that he and Riley will
start discussing Smart’s future in eight to 10 days.

"We’re going to sit down, analytically evaluate the season along
multiple dimensions, and we’re going to talk to Keith," Lacob said via
conference call. "We’re going to figure out if he’s the right guy moving
forward. Certainly, he has done a good job in many respects, and I
think it’s a question of what we see as the vision going forward.
"Is he the right guy? We don’t have an answer to that, but we’re going to sit down and have a discussion."
Smart went 36-46, a 10-win improvement over the 2009-10 season.
However, he couldn’t fix the Warriors’ defensive and rebounding
problems, and they finished 27th in points allowed and last in
rebounding margin.

The Warriors will extend general manager Larry Riley’s contract
through 2013 and bring in prominent sports agent Bob Myers to act as
assistant general manager, a league source said late Wednesday.
Details of the contracts were not available.

Riley, originally hired as an assistant coach under Don Nelson, was
an assistant general manager under Chris Mullin for the 2008-09 season
and took over when Mullin was not extended before last season. He’s been
in the league for 20 years with extensive experience in scouting,
coaching and player personnel.

Myers, who works for renowned sports agent Arn Tellem, is an expert
in contract law who will be helpful in navigating a new collective
bargaining agreement.
The moves overshadowed the Warriors’ 110-86 victory over Portland,
which improved the team’s win total by 10 over last season. That
improving team on the court and a solidified front office give the
franchise a more focused vision for the future than it had at this time a
year ago.
Now, the Warriors can do little but sit and wait to see when and if
they can act on a plan to find a center, a big third guard and bolster
their bench, because the uncertainty of the league’s
collective-bargaining agreement might outweigh the Warriors’ clarity.

Many laughed when Warriors guard Monta Ellis called himself the
second-best player in the league last year, behind Kobe Bryant and ahead
of LeBron James.

Certainly, such a ranking would still unanimously be considered too high
by objective basketball minds. But five games into this season, Ellis’
self-evaluation seems less delusional and more like extreme confidence.
The way he’s dominated, the way he’s led the Warriors (4-1) to their
best start in 16 years, Ellis’ being mentioned among the NBA elite isn’t
as laughable.

"It’s all coming together for him," Warriors coach Keith Smart said. "He’s moving into another group, another area with his play."

Ellis has Warriors fans abuzz and, perhaps most important, management in awe. The Warriors still are interested in landing another difference maker, but, according to multiple team sources, there are only a handful of players who would make the Warriors consider trading Ellis.

That means, though the trade deadline is three months away, a trade involving Ellis is looking unlikely. The sources said Warriors’ brass are loving the new Ellis, his pairing with point guard Stephen Curry and how he is leading the team.

"He’s one of the elite players in this league," said Warriors small forward Dorell Wright, who won a championship alongside perennial All-NBA guard Dwyane Wade.

Oracle Corp. CEO Larry Ellison is among "more than a dozen" suitors who
have submitted non-binding bids for the Warriors, a source close to the
negotiations said Tuesday.

"He is a part of it," the source said.

According to another source, so are the San Francisco Giants, 24 Hour
Fitness owner Mark Mastrov, an NFL owner, a former Lakers star and a
group of prominent Chinese businesspeople, among others. Galatioto
Sports Partners and Warriors owner Chris Cohan will choose the best
prospects in the next week.

The top three or four will have access to the Warriors’ financial records over the following month before the next phase of the sale begins.

Some people familiar with the bidding believe the offers are between $275 million and $350 million. Michael Jordan recently paid $275 million for the Charlotte franchise. Sources say Ellison hasn’t moved from his original $315 million price tag.

Others who are part of the process say Cohan could get double what Jordan paid because the Bay Area’s financial demographics and media market make it more valuable than Phoenix. The Suns were sold for $401 million in 2004 in a package with the franchise’s WNBA and arena football teams.

Two factors that could hold down bids are the team’s poor performance on the court and Cohan’s financial problems. The Warriors have made the playoffs once in the past 16 seasons, and in March the team dropped prices for all returning season-ticket holders. The Internal Revenue Service said in 2007 that Cohan owed more than $160 million in back income taxes and penalties from the 1998 sale of a cable TV company.
