NBA to end lockout; games would start Christmas Day

Early this morning, NBA fans received their first Christmas gift: a tentative agreement to end the 149-day lockout.

One final, 15-hour marathon negotiating session brought together the final elements of a new collective bargaining agreement that fans have been yearning for since owners locked out the players July 1.

The deal will allow the league to begin its season on Christmas Day, with the season's first tipoff to take place at Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks will play the Celtics at noon.

Mason says Knicks owner wants NBA to play
KnicksKnicks guard Roger Mason knows at least one owner who wished the NBA lockout ended with a labor agreement Thursday night: James Dolan.

Mason, vice president of the Players Association, has rubbed shoulders with the Knicks owner countless times this summer and fall in Manhattan hotel board rooms instead of the team's plush practice facility.

Report: Cleveland shopping for Rudy Gay?
Cavs

From Fox Sports Ohio’s Sam Amico:

A couple insiders have said the Cavs again are exploring some sort of deal for Memphis forward Rudy Gay. Perhaps their best selling point would be to mention how well the Grizzlies fared in the playoffs without him.

via NBA notes: Rumors heat up as draft nears.

Sessions could get squeezed by draft
Cavs
If and when the Cavaliers draft Kyrie Irving in 11 days, it will give them three quality point guards on the roster. That might be one too many for Ramon Sessions' liking.

Sessions would seem to be the odd man out, with Irving as the point guard of the future and Baron Davis on hand to groom him as such. Sessions averaged 13.3 points and 5.2 assists last season, his first in Cleveland. Now 25 and a four-year veteran, Sessions believes he can start in this league. That doesn't appear likely to happen in Cleveland.

Cavaliers unlikely to score a big star
CavsThe Cavaliers will finally learn during Tuesday night's lottery where they are drafting next month. Unfortunately, there isn't a set of pingpong balls on the planet that will improve the quality of this draft. We've heard for months this could be the worst draft in 25 years, but just how bad is it? This bad: One NBA talent evaluator said last week he isn't sure there is a future All-Star anywhere in this draft. To put that in perspective, every draft between 1978 and 2008 has produced at least three All-Stars, except one year (2007). That draft is still too young to judge, since guys like Mike Conley, Jeff Green and Joakim Noah could still make an All-Star team before their careers are through.

Should Cavaliers go after Greg Oden? Hey, Mary!
Cavs

Got a Cavs question? Send it in. Submit your question at cleveland.com/heymary, and Plain Dealer Cavs beat writer Mary Schmitt Boyer will choose at least one to answer each Sunday here in the Sports section. All of Mary’s answers are archived online.

Q: Hey, Mary: I recently heard that Greg Oden will be a free agent this upcoming summer. It has been said that the Cavs can’t attract top free agents. But with Oden growing up in Indiana and playing at Ohio State, wouldn’t a Midwestern destination like Cleveland be appealing to him? He has had injury problems. But with the success the Cavs had in their patience with [Zydrunas Ilgauskas], do you think they might pursue him, since a dominant big man is their glaring weakness? — Rich Smith, Columbus

Tom Izzo visits with Cleveland Cavaliers, but leaves town without making decisio
Cavs
Tom Izzo came, he saw, he dined. What he'll do next, however, remains uncertain.

The Michigan State coach and his family spent all Thursday afternoon and evening with Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, General Manager Chris Grant, and assistant general manager Lance Blanks.

According to multiple sources, the visit went well and Izzo and his family were impressed with the Cavs' facilities and the city. But Izzo left town after nearly nine hours without accepting Gilbert's offer

Reshuffled front office isn't slowing Cleveland Cavaliers' off-season
Cavs
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- One message has become quite clear since the Cavaliers' season ended just three weeks ago. Team owner Dan Gilbert is not interested in status quo.

He's fired the coach, accepted the resignation of the general manager and there are no signs of stopping.

Gilbert has qualified these moves by saying he will not be afraid to take risks. Or as he said Friday: "The unknown is just that."

Cavaliers will enter coaching search with plenty of big name hopes
Cavs

No NBA team makes a coaching change without considering who will be the next coach. Some plans are more feasible than others, of course.

After firing Mike Brown after five seasons on Sunday, the Cavs have thrust themselves into a complex and uncertain coaching search. For one, they are one of six teams now looking for a head coach. Also without a firm handle on the future of free agent LeBron James, the team will certainly be limited in how it can pitch its job to the top-flight coaches they may look to attract.

Usually, teams want new coaches in place before the draft and the start of free agency. But with the cir*****stances, the team may not be able to make a decision until after James does. That might not be until July.

Mike Brown and staff preparing for likely split from Cleveland Cavaliers
Cavs
Decision day hasn't arrived yet but it appears everyone is preparing for it.

The Cavaliers had not performed or scheduled exit interviews with players or coaches as of Monday. Once some or all of those take place, there will be a verdict on coach Mike Brown. But if that decision is a parting of ways, the sides are getting ready for it.

Cavaliers have lost playoff edge: Windhorst Beat Blog
Cavs

CHICAGO -- Thoughts following the Cavs' 108-106 Game 3 loss to the Chicago Bulls:

• The Cavs' treated Game 3 like it was a regular season game. The Bulls treated it like a playoff game. Stripping away all the details and the coaching decisions and the calls, that was the reason why the Cavs lost.

Shaq's back -- but status of Cavaliers' big man for Wednesday's s
Cavs

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- While the Cavaliers decide whether or not to play Shaquille O'Neal in the season finale on Wednesday, it may be easy to forget that having the option to play him before the end of the season is a victory in itself.

O'Neal has been cleared by doctors to return and he went through all of practice Monday at Cleveland Clinic Courts. If his right thumb makes it through Tuesday's contact practice without problems, there's a good chance coach Mike Brown will give him around 20 minutes of playing time Wednesday against the Atlanta Hawks.
