NBA to end lockout; games would start Christmas Day

Early this morning, NBA fans received their first Christmas gift: a tentative agreement to end the 149-day lockout.

One final, 15-hour marathon negotiating session brought together the final elements of a new collective bargaining agreement that fans have been yearning for since owners locked out the players July 1.

The deal will allow the league to begin its season on Christmas Day, with the season's first tipoff to take place at Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks will play the Celtics at noon.

Mason says Knicks owner wants NBA to play
KnicksKnicks guard Roger Mason knows at least one owner who wished the NBA lockout ended with a labor agreement Thursday night: James Dolan.

Mason, vice president of the Players Association, has rubbed shoulders with the Knicks owner countless times this summer and fall in Manhattan hotel board rooms instead of the team's plush practice facility.

 Ainge’s offseason no slam dunk
CelticsAfter what just happened to the Celtics [team stats] during their late-season swoon and playoff collapse, it seems some of you would rather see their roster hit by a trainload of TNT than watch it again on TNT.

Might be time for Baby to leave Celtics’ nest
CelticsGlen Davis picked an inopportune time to have one of the worst stretches of his career. Even worse, this forgettable postseason may be Davis’ final memory with the Celtics [team stats].

Davis will be an unrestricted free agent this summer and clearly intends to test the market. This postseason was not the best audition, as Davis shot 39.1 percent and averaged 4.9 points and 3.6 rebounds.
“You just can’t base it on just this playoffs,” Davis said. “My whole body of work, I feel like I can play in this league, I can start in this league, from my second year when Kevin (Garnett) went down and my third year playing in the playoffs. This year was my best year. I just didn’t play well in the playoffs this year. I didn’t get a good rhythm. Some things happen like that. I don’t think this playoffs hurt me as much.”

High hopes for seeing more Shaquille O’Neal
CelticsCeltics management, as usual, knows better than to make any promises regarding Shaquille O’Neal. The Big Question Mark played a limited, non-running role in yesterday’s practice, but your guess may be as good as that of Doc Rivers or Danny Ainge when it’s time to handicap O’Neal’s availability for Game 1 in Miami tomorrow. The coach and the general manager both appear, at the very least, to have more confidence that there will be a Shaq sighting at some point in the series.

 Celtics sign Harangody to contract
Celtics

Doc Rivers announced Tuesday that the Celtics have agreed to a two-year contract with second-round pick Luke Harangody. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Notre Dame alum met briefly with the media following the Shaquille O’Neal press conference.

“It’s a great feeling to have a little job security, especially guaranteed,” Harangody said. “It helps me sleep easier at night. And to sign the contract is also a great feeling as well.”

The 52nd pick of the 2010 draft, Harangody joins a star-filled front court in Boston. However, the prospect of playing with Shaquille O’Neal does not intimidate the former All-Big East player.

 Celtics waive Wallace
CelticsHe wasn't kidding.

After a summer spent answering recurring questions about the contract of retired vet Rasheed Wallace, Celtics president Danny Ainge said the matter would be solved sooner rather than later.

The solution: The Celtics waived the 15-year veteran, reaching a mutual agreement on the two years and $13 million Wallace left on the table.

For Celtics, it’s back to business
Celtics
The NBA Finals have backed all other Celtics  business up against the wall, starting with Thursday’s NBA draft and what the team should do with the 19th overall pick.

Then kicks in the really important business of expiring contracts and Paul Pierce ’s player option, which must be exercised by June 30.

According to a source, the team will not passively sit on the Celtics captain’s situation.

Pierce: Hurt LBJ still one of the best
Celtics

The word out of Cleveland is that a strained right elbow and and a bone bruise of his olecranon were what had LeBron James shooting a free throw with his left hand at the end of Cleveland's 94-96 series-clinching win over Chicago Tuesday night.

Like a lot of people who saw replays of James wincing as he held his right arm after using it to make a free throw, Celtics center Kendrick Perkins was puzzled.

Celtics hope to get shot at Michael Finley
Celtics

Mark Murphy

The Celtics have identified what is believed to be a relatively small field of potential free agents now that the deadline for player buyouts has passed.

A Celtics source confirmed yesterday the primary target is veteran swingman Michael Finley, who was bought out of his contract by San Antonio on Monday. Finley is expected to clear waivers tonight. The team also is interested, to a lesser degree, in free agent guard Larry Hughes.
