Colangelo shopping for big men as Raptors camp looms

Injuries and lack of depth up front have the GM looking for trading partners and searching the free-agent market.

There could very well be additions to the Raptors roster before training camp opens Tuesday.

With injuries to two of his young big men, president and general manager
Bryan Colangelo is scouring the trade and free-agent market looking to
make one last summer move.

“With the injury to Ed Davis, there has been more talk about adding a big,” Colangelo said Thursday.

Davis, the team’s first-round draft pick in June, is out for at least six weeks after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee this week, and second-round draft choice Solomon Alabi has missed all of the team’s informal workouts this week with a hamstring injury.

“There’s a universe of bigs still out there,” the GM said.

The injuries, coupled with the market, have made Colangelo more active in trying to acquire someone either as a free agent or in a trade.

“Either way, if it addresses a potential need,” he said.

Only a few big men are still available as free agents this close to the start of training camp. However, Earl Barron, who finished last season with the New York Knicks, David Harrison, a former Indiana Pacer who played last season in China, ex-Raptor and Euro-league veteran Primoz Brezec, and the likes of Fabricio Oberto and Peter John Ramos would be on a list of possible additions.
