Carmelo 'better fit than LeBron' for the Knicks

Not only does Carmelo Anthony apparently have his heart set on playing in New York, but a close confidant of the NBA superstar told The Post yesterday that he is a better fit for the Big Apple than LeBron James.

"Nothing would bother him," the confidant said of Anthony playing here. "The media wouldn't bother him because he really likes people. The pressure wouldn't bother him because he loves to have the game in his hands. Nothing bothers him."

Carmelo could force trade to Knicks this season: report
Knicks
It seems more and more likely Carmelo Anthony will not sign a contract extension with the Nuggets, which likely will force the team to trade him, perhaps to the Knicks.

ESPN.com reported last night that Anthony is "going to make it real clear that he's not coming back" to Denver, according to an NBA source.

"Both Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke and Anthony already are well aware that they don't have a future together, sources say. That became clear to Kroenke at a reception after Anthony's July 11 (wedding) to La La Vasquez in Manhattan," the report says.

Andrew Bynum, Shannon Brown injury updates
LakersWith speculative rumors of Andrew Bynum possibly not playing Game 4 of the NBA Finals spreading quickly, Pau Gasol practically sneered at the notion after Lakers practice Wednesday.

“He wants to be out there, no matter what,” Gasol said of Bynum.

Bynum backed Gasol’s hunch later by saying: “I’m doing OK. Just finished treatment, got a lot of the swelling out.  Going to do another one in about three hours.  I’m going to be playing (Thursday night).  I will be playing.”

Trying to get to the bottom of pay-cut story on Phil Jackson
Lakers

Michael Wilbon is a media giant, blabbermouth co-host of PTI, while also working alongside ESPN basketball expert  Magic Johnson at times, an occasional column for the Washington Post and a guest this week on Tony Kornheiser's radio show in Washington, D.C.

Wilbon has so much to say, there's no problem believing him when he says. "I have no idea what I said on the radio."

Phil Jackson says he's likely to coach Lakers next year
LakersProBasketballTalk

In his pregame talk with the media, Phil Jackson sounded a little less certain, and a little more like this was all tied to winning another title. From the AP story:

Lakers coach Phil Jackson says he hasn't decided whether he'll return for another season on the Los Angeles bench but he might be compelled to come back if his team wins another championship.

Lakers are unlikely to make a major trade this season
Lakers

Anything can happen before the Feb. 18 deadline, but the team probably doesn't want to spend the big bucks on top of an already huge payroll.

Two seasons ago, with a massive expiring contract of $9.1 million and a charming penchant for fumbling entry passes, Brown was the Lakers' ticket to success when the Memphis Grizzlies, dying to cut costs, gladly took Brown, six weekday passes to Knott's Berry Farm and a two-night stay at the Buena Park Good Nite Inn in exchange for Pau Gasol.

 Lamar Odom Injury Update
LakersQuick word from Lamar Odom after Friday's 97-92 win over the Kings in Las Vegas. LO limped to the locker room at the end of the first half after getting kicked in the right shin, possibly by Sacramento's Jon Brockman, who was locked in a scrum on the floor with Ron Artest. Josh Powell started the second half, and when Odom tried to enter the game he quickly had to check out, clearly in pain.
